Oxford Houses Are An Excellent Choice If You’re Looking For Sober Living in Washington State

The decisions you make in the early days of your recovery are critical – especially when it comes to where you lay your head every night. Having a safe place to stay is imperative to staying clean. You need to be in a supportive sober living environment that is favorable to recovery. If you are in an unhealthy home situation where you are likely to use drugs or alcohol, relapse is inevitable.

Some people choose to stay at their current residence and work their recovery program from the home they knew before they got clean and sober. Others decide they need more support and choose to venture away from their familiar surroundings. You need to do whatever is right for you. But, if you’re on the hunt for a sober living community in WA, an Oxford House might be the right choice for you.

What is an Oxford House?

When it comes to sober living, some people choose a sober house or a halfway house. An Oxford House is in a class all its own. In order for a sober living facility to be classified as an Oxford House, it has to undergo certification and get a charter from the publicly supported non-profit Oxford network. The network is comprised of more than 2,000 Oxford Houses nationwide.

An Oxford House is a democratically run, self-supporting, drug free home of six to fifteen residents who have agreed to live a drug-free lifestyle and work a program of recovery.  Oxford Houses are gender specific. In other words, men can only live with men and women can only live with women. Some Oxford Houses in Washington State allow men or women to bring their children.

According to the Oxford House website, “The philosophy behind Oxford House is three-fold: [1] self-help is the bedrock of recovery, [2] disciplined democracy is key to living together, and [3] self-support builds efficacy in sobriety comfortable enough to avoid relapse.”

What is the Application Process to Get into An Oxford House in the State of Washington?

Anyone who has a desire to stay clean and live in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction can live in an Oxford House. But, first they must apply to stay at the house. The application process is very simple.

Someone wanting to stay at an Oxford House must first go to the house they want to live in and provide a completed application. They will then be interviewed by the current members of the house. The application and interview will be considered by the current residents. If 80 percent of the house approve of the application, the applicant will be accepted and allowed to move in.

If the house votes against the applicant, he or she is encouraged to apply to move into a different Oxford House in the area.

What is It Like Living in an Oxford House in WA? What Are the Rules?

For the protection of those who live in an Oxford House, there are rules that everyone is expected to follow. These are designed to keep the house safe and sober. The most important and strictly enforced rule is that you must stay clean from drugs and alcohol at all times. If you are caught using drugs or you are found with drugs in your possession, you will be asked to leave immediately. You will have thirty minutes to vacate the premises.

Keep in mind that there is no one “in charge” at an Oxford House, but everyone takes a turn managing the house in the position of an elected officer. For the most part, everyone is expected to respect the rules and be self-governing. If you don’t follow the rules, there are consequences. The most severe consequence is that you will be asked to leave.

One thing to keep in mind about staying in an Oxford House is that you will most likely have a roommate, although this varies from house to house. You are expected to show respect for everyone who lives in the house and to treat everyone as you would like to be treated.

Here are some of the rules at every Oxford House (pretty simple, straight-forward stuff!):

  • For the first thirty days, you may not stay overnight anywhere outside of the house.
  • No overnight guests and no sex allowed in the house.
  • You must notify the house if you are prescribed a narcotic of any kind.
  • You are expected to take all medications prescribed by your doctor.
  • All medicine is to be kept in your living space and out of view.
  • No sharing of medication under any circumstances.
  • You must attend outside support groups (like 12-step meetings) regularly.
  • You must attend weekly house meetings. These are mandatory.
  • You may not use other people’s belongings without permission
  • You are expected to mark your own food with your initials. If you eat someone else’s food, it is considered stealing.
  • You will be assigned chores. You are expected to complete them when you are supposed to.
  • You may not have guests visit you who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Physical violence will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave if you demonstrate this type of behavior.
  • There is no curfew at an Oxford House to accommodate people who have night jobs or stay out late to fellowship with other people in recovery. However; when you come in late, you are expected to be quiet and respect sleeping residents of the house.

Remember that every Oxford House is democratically run. Violation of the rules will be dealt with by the house and there are consequences.

How Much Does It Cost To Live In An Oxford House In Washington State?

Living in an Oxford House is very affordable, which is one of the many reasons why people choose to live in this sober living environment. All Oxford Houses must be fully self-supporting, so residents must pay an equal share of the rent and expenses. Rent and utilities are factored into to the total monthly cost.

Alcohol Rehab in Bellevue

Keep in mind that Oxford Houses are regular houses leased in regular neighborhoods. They vary in how fancy or not-so fancy they can be. Usually, Oxford Houses are in very affordable neighborhoods to keep the cost of living down.

Residents can pay their share every week, every two weeks, or every month as long as they pay the share they agreed upon when they move in – every house is different. Depending on the cost of the total monthly bills, the typical share for each resident is $80 - $250 every week.

How Much Clean Time Do You Have to Have To Stay At An Oxford House?

There is no clean time requirement for staying at an Oxford House. You can have as little as a day clean or as long as ten years. Many people go to an Oxford House straight from rehab or after they complete a detox.

Some people stay at an Oxford House while they complete intensive outpatient treatment

Keep in mind, though, that the house has to vote you in for you to be permitted to stay at an Oxford House. If you are just coming in off the streets with a few days clean with no real plan for how to stay clean, you probably aren’t going to be voted in. Most people who are staying at an Oxford House are serious about their recovery. They want to be around people who are serious about their recovery too.

How Long Can You Stay At An Oxford House? Is There a Time Limit?

There is no time limit for staying at an Oxford House, although the average stay is a year. You can stay there as long as you think you need to. Some people stay for just a few months after they have left in-patient rehab and are attending outpatient treatment. Others stay for a full year while they stabilize in recovery and get a solid foundation in their sobriety. Many people live in an Oxford House long-term and stay there for years because they appreciate the lifestyle an Oxford House has to offer.
