What To Do In Case Of An Overdose

While it’s important to know about the various resources available to you if you’re addicted, it’s especially vital that you know how to recognize the signs of an overdose.

Drug overdoses have become incredibly common today. In fact, they’ve even had a hand in lowering the average life expectancy of Americans as a whole.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with a substance abuse problem, you absolutely must be able to identify the symptoms of overdosing. And beyond that, knowing how to handle it effectively and what steps to follow can actually end up saving a life.

Not all overdoses are going to look the same. Just as every drug varies in the effects it has on your body, the symptoms of an overdose are going to be different from substance to substance.

While it might be tempting to do so, do not try to transport the victim to the hospital before talking to either of these emergency services.

Addiction Helplines for Addicts

Whether you're in the middle of a substance abuse crisis, are looking for detailed information on public addiction services, or simply want to ask the advice of a trained professional, there is a variety of Newcastle, WA addiction helplines that can help you in your time of need.

Free & Low-Cost Newcastle Addiction Programs

Just as addiction is a disease that affects the entire family rather than just the individual, substance use disorders also impact the community as a whole as well.

In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that substance abuse is annually responsible for more than $740 billion in costs related to crime, decreased worker productivity, and healthcare expenditures.

As such, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that both municipal and federal governments offer a variety of low-cost and free addiction treatment services as part of an effort to reduce this enormous economic burden.

Newcastle, WA residents, in particular, have access to Medicaid coverage if they meet the right qualifications. This coverage is usually subsidized based on your specific income, making it an affordable option no matter how much money you make each year.

Newcastle Addiction Resources

As a result, this government-sponsored healthcare covers certain addiction treatment services that may have otherwise been financially prohibitive for certain individuals. For more information on Washington State Medicaid coverage or to apply, visit the Washington State Health Care Authority Medicaid page for details.

Sponsorship is also available for people looking for low-cost or free addiction treatment programs in Newcastle. Some treatment facilities waive treatment costs depending on the direness of need in the individual.

12-Step Meetings Around Newcastle

One of the oldest support group models for addicts, 12-step programs have brought addicts the healing power of community for decades. The two most well-known of these types of groups are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. And within the Newcastle area, there are plenty of each to choose from.

Founders of the 12-step model, Alcoholics Anonymous is a free support group composed of recovering alcoholics from almost every background, socio-economic status, or addiction experience.

There are no political ties, no age or education requirements, and no membership dues. And given that AA has become one of the most widely recognized addiction treatment programs today, there are a staggering number of meetings that are happening every single day.

You can contact the organization directly at (206) 587-2838 or email them at info@seattleaa.org.

As far as meetings go, Newcastle actually doesn’t have any local groups. However, nearby areas like Redmond, Mercer Island, and Bellevue have plenty of meetings to choose from. Below are some of the closest.

While many people believe that Narcotics Anonymous is simply the “drug” version of AA, the truth is that the organization does not make the distinction between illicit drugs and alcohol. Instead, it simply expands the topic of treatment to addiction in general, thereby encompassing both in its meetings.

Of course, NA still follows the 12-step process which many substance abusers have found so helpful during their recovery.

Also, like AA, NA is an especially popular avenue for recovering addicts to seek support and maintain the mindset required to live a drug-free lifestyle.

You can get in touch directly with the organization at (855) 464-7477 or (206) 790-8888, and you can reach them by email at info@seattlena.org.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many NA meetings taking place within Newcastle. However, the Greater Seattle Area in general hosts literally hundreds.

The list of meetings below is some of the closest ones you'll find around Newcastle – all less than 8 miles away. You can also expand the search even further using the Narcotics Anonymous meeting finder.

Newcastle, WA SMART Recovery Meetings

Whereas 12-step programs rely on a form of spirituality in order to recover (surrendering your will to a higher power, etc.), SMART Recovery programs take a different approach to treating addiction.

These 4-point programs focus on self-empowerment and self-reliance by teaching members the tools and techniques needed for self-directed change. Instead of admitting powerlessness, then, SMART Recovery programs aim to educate addicts on how to cope with cravings, deal with emotional upsets, and foster a clearer awareness of the individual emotions and thoughts behind our actions.

What’s more, these programs and the techniques taught during them are usually backed up by scientific evidence and continue to evolve as more research becomes available.

While there aren’t any SMART Recovery groups meeting exclusively in Newcastle, there are several meetings nearby. They include:

Meetings for Family Members of Addicts

As anyone who has dealt with an addicted family member can tell you, addiction doesn’t just impact the individual with the substance use disorder. Instead, this disease can cripple familial relationships, sabotage lifelong friendships, and can (and often does) tear partners apart.

Thankfully, though, there is are several support groups called Al-Anon and Alateen which are dedicated specifically to helping family members cope with and seek help for an addicted loved one.

Built off of the same core tenets of 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon is dedicated to building a support network for individuals struggling with the problems caused by a family member’s addictions. They provide advice, personal experiences, and a sense of community that can be invaluable in dealing with an addicted loved one.

Specifically, this group can be particularly helpful when it comes to recognizing the signs of and putting a stop to codependent behaviors that are not only toxic but are also typically enabling the addicted party to keep on using and abusing drugs.

Like Al-Anon, Alateen is for family members of alcoholics. However, these groups are created specifically so that teenagers can get together with similarly aged youths for support.

Many teenagers find that opening up to others who are going through the same problems in their formative years is much easier than when surrounded by a room of adults. And it’s true – this group can be especially helpful in learning how to cope with addiction in the family if you’re a teenager.

Growing up in an addicted household (whether it be with a sibling, parent, extended family member) can leave scars – scars on your personality, your emotion, your intellect, your life as you know it. And these scars can persist well into adulthood.

For those who are still grappling with a childhood traumatized by an addicted family member, you can find help and support at Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings. An extension of the 12-step programs, these groups gather to help survivors of dysfunctional homes cope with the long-lasting and detrimental effects that growing up with addiction can cause.

What’s more, there are a number of ACOA meetings happening in the Newcastle, Washington State area almost every day of the week. All you have to do is use the official ACOA World Meeting List to find one near you.
