The Dangers of Overdosing

One of the biggest dangers of a substance abuse problem is the risk of suffering from an overdose. These hazardous reactions to too much of a drug or alcohol can cause lasting physical and psychological damage. On top of that, overdoses can (and often do) result in a staggering loss of life across the country.

In fact, the problem has actually gotten so out of hand in the United States that drug overdoses are now the number one killer of Americans under the age of 50.

In 2017 alone, more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses.

The trend is only getting worse as time goes on. According to the CDC, the age-adjusted rate of overdose deaths in the U.S. grew by nearly 10% in 2017 compared to 2016.

Now more than ever, then, it’s vital to know how to recognize the signs of a drug overdose and what to do to help treat one.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Groups

As one of the many offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous was designed to appeal to all kinds of addicts, not just alcoholics. Heroin users, cocaine addicts, meth abusers, and even problem drinkers are all welcome.

And like AA, its meetings are free, completely anonymous, and widely available.

In the Newport Shores, WA area, there are plenty of different groups to have a look at.

Al-Anon for Friends & Family

Addicts themselves aren’t the only ones that are hurt by a substance use disorder. In fact, friends and family members can all suffer from long-lasting and crippling problems brought on by someone else’s alcoholism.

This is where Al-Anon comes in. This 12-step group is devoted to helping those whose lives have been impacted by an alcoholic.

There are a fair number of Al-Anon meetings taking place in and around Newport Shores.

Alateen for Youths

A branch of Al-Anon, Alateen is designed specifically for young people who have been negatively impacted by another person’s drinking.

In these meetings, youths can discuss the hardships caused by another person’s alcoholism with other members of their own age. This makes it much easier for these individuals to open up and to get the support they need to stay happy, healthy, and safe.

Like other 12-step meetings, there are quite a few Alateen groups taking place nearby. Below are some of the closest meetings to Newport Shore, WA.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) Meetings in the Area

Children who grow up in alcoholic homes can end up being afflicted with problems that last well into adulthood. For many individuals, this can lead to seriously debilitating issues that make it hard for them to stay healthy and stable.

That’s where Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) meetings come in. These 12-step groups are devoted to helping people who have grown up around alcoholics. The meetings help to mend old wounds and allow adult children of alcoholics to live a healthy, functional life.

These meetings aren't as easy to find as other 12-step groups, but there are still quite a few to choose from.

SMART Recovery: 12-Step Alternative

While 12-step meetings are without a doubt some of the most popular support groups around, they aren’t the only ones. In fact, there are quite a few 12-step alternatives to choose from.

SMART Recovery is one of the most popular of these alternatives.

These groups take a non-spiritual, science-heavy approach to recovery. Meetings usually include teaching techniques and strategies that members can start using right away to help cope with cravings and to avoid triggers.

For many people, these support groups are a vital part of their recovery.

There are quite a few meetings around Newport Shores too. Have a look below for some of the closest.

While in-person meetings are undoubtedly the most helpful kind, not everyone will be able to make it to the face-to-face groups above.

Thankfully, there are plenty of online support groups that allow for much more flexibility. These usually take place over email, on online forums, in real-time chatrooms, or even via video calls.

In the end, just because you can’t make it to a meeting doesn’t mean you can’t get the support you need to recover.

Below are some great places to start looking for online support groups.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While the connection and healing gained from attending a local support group can be monumental for recovery, most addicts will need more than what these groups can provide.

This is where a professional treatment program may come into play. These facilities are designed specifically to give patients the absolute best odds at conquering their addiction and staying sober in the long-term.

Many of these rehab facilities use only evidence-based treatments and are run by qualified and licensed physicians and nursing staff too. This means that means your safety is always a top priority.

In the end, a professional program can offer two major benefits: a better chance at sobriety and a safer recovery.

Besides a better rate of recovery, professional programs have a few other notable benefits too. It’s worth choosing a professional program over trying to recover alone without any help. Some of the benefits of choosing a professional program include:

  • Being able to choose from a wide range of addiction medications that can make recovery far more manageable
  • Being able to enjoy an assortment of amenities that can provide a more comfortable transition to sobriety
  • Receiving emotional and motivational support that will keep you from relapsing
  • Getting connected with other addicts going through similar issues and building up one’s social support network

Professional programs are able to help many people achieve long-term recovery. These programs provide patients with the long-term skills and resources needed to stay sober.

There are two main phases of a complete treatment program: detoxification and rehabilitation.

During detoxification, easing the physical withdrawal symptoms associated with addiction is the main concern. Once a drug is removed from an addict’s routine, their body begins to re-adjust to functioning normally without it. This, of course, can cause a host of uncomfortable symptoms. Some of these symptoms can even turn deadly.

A professional detox program can keep substance abusers from turning back to drugs or alcohol. It also gives addicts peace of mind since these programs can prevent and treat life-threatening complications that may pop up along the way.

Rehabilitation is next. This part of treatment deals more with the mental side of addiction. With treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapy, addicts learn new, healthier life skills and more effective ways of dealing with stress than substance abuse.

There are three major types of rehab programs: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).

  • Inpatient – What most people imagine when they think of rehab, an inpatient program is like a recovery retreat. Patients eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same location. This allows for a more controlled environment and the highest level of care. It can be quite disruptive though since many rehab facilities don’t allow patients to attend work or school at the same time. These programs usually last around 30 days.
  • Outpatient – The main benefit of these programs is flexibility. Rather than requiring patients to stay on campus grounds, an outpatient program allows recovering addicts to live out their days normally while attending treatment sessions in the evening. These programs usually last for about 3 months.
  • IOPs – This type of program provides the flexibility of an outpatient program with the intensiveness of an inpatient program. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings but last longer and occur more frequently throughout the week. These programs are usually around 3 months long as well.

Different types of rehab programs will be a better fit for different patients. Fully understand the features of each program to gain a better understanding of what may be a better fit.

Enjoy a Variety of Outpatient Programs at Northpoint the Evergreen

Northpoint the Evergreen offers a high quality of care. We are an outpatient treatment facility, so our patients enjoy optimal flexibility. We are able to offer a variety of different outpatient treatment programs. Depending on the needs of each patient, he or she may choose to opt for only one outpatient program or he or she may transition from one to another.

Understanding the basics of the different types of outpatient programs that we offer is crucial in making a decision. Three of the recovery programs that we offer include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHPs). You will enjoy a high level of care with a PHP. With this type of outpatient program, you’ll need to travel to our addiction treatment center at least 5 days a week for 6 hours of treatment each time. You’ll get to enjoy an assortment of evidence-based treatment services, from behavioral therapies to counseling services.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs). Those who do not need as intense care can try an IOP. This type of program will require you to receive anywhere from 10 to 15 hours of therapy each week. This gives you plenty of time to focus on work or school. You can easily schedule your treatment on your free time.
  • Traditional Outpatient Programs (OPs). If you’re dealing with a mild to moderate addiction, you may benefit tremendously from a traditional OP. There is no set commitment with this type of program. You can receive as much treatment as you need.

If you're at a loss of what to do and choose, you can always speak with one of our addiction specialists. They can assess your situation to give you tailored insight and advice on what you need to succeed.

It’s located in Edmonds, Washington, and is not too far away from Northpoint the Evergreen.

You can always consider transitioning from one of our addiction treatment centers to another. Our team of addiction specialists can help you determine what it is that you need. If you need a higher level of care, we can have you admitted to Northpoint Washington. On the other hand, if you are doing well with a less intense level of care, you can always transition over to the Northpoint the Evergreen.

How to Pay for Addiction Treatment

With addiction rates soaring, more and more addiction treatment centers are opening across America. The cost of addiction treatment will vary depending on the services that the rehab center can offer, their level of care and more.

Most people hesitate to get addiction treatment because they’re unsure of how they’ll pay for it. You won’t have to pay for addiction treatment out of your own pocket thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). All private health insurance plans must offer some coverage for addiction treatment. The amount of coverage, however, can vary depending on the type of insurance plan that one has.

Do you want to get more information about the amount of coverage that you have?

We can verify your insurance information for you. Not only can we determine the amount of coverage that you have, but we can also help you figure out a way to get the addiction treatment that you need in the most affordable manner possible.

The Difference Between In-Network and Out-of-Network Insurance

Northpoint the Evergreen has partnered up with many insurance companies. Many insurance networks are in-network with us, which means that those who have policies from these companies are able to get pre-negotiated rates with us. Those who have in-network insurance with Northpoint the Evergreen will usually be able to get more discounts as well.

On the other hand, those who use an out-of-network provider will not get the same discounts. We do not have pre-negotiated rates with these insurance providers. Due to this reason, these individuals may not be guaranteed the same rates. With that said, this doesn’t mean that these individuals cannot get a great deal when receiving addiction treatment from us.

Our addiction specialists can help patients with either in-network or out-of-network insurance. We will work out a reasonable and fair payment plan with all patients. We will also help patients figure out how they can pay for any expenses that are out-of-pocket.
